Old Sweet Songs from A Prairie Home Companion: 1974 - 1976
The ¼-inch, 2-track tapes we used to record the earliest episodes of A Prairie Home Companion have survived flood, smoke damage, and the immutable and universal effects of aging. Starting around 1994, with the help of 3M and some very skilled engineers at Minnesota Public Radio, we undertook the process of baking and digitizing all archival tapes.
The technical results were generally excellent, but upon close analysis, minor errors in the original mixes and tape machine calibration issues are undeniable; we were a low-budget guerilla radio organization in those days.
However, nothing I've heard has ever diminished the joy I feel hearing this music again, music that filled my childhood with laughter and meaning. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do, despite its imperfections. — Jason Keillor (co-producer, engineer)

On July 6, 1974, about a dozen people made their way to the Janet Wallace Auditorium at Macalester College in St. Paul for the first broadcast of a new radio show. Things went pretty well, so Garrison Keillor and his team produced another show, then another . . . close to 500 in the first 10 years alone.
Today A Prairie Home Companion is heard by more than 4 million listeners each week on 590 public radio stations. This new collection looks back at the early days, in particular early music, with pianist Butch Thompson, mandolin maestro Peter Ostroushko, Dakota Dave Hull, and the first Powdermilk Biscuit Band: Adam Granger, Bob Douglas, and Mary DuShane.
